Topic | LIS at the heart of evidenced based service planning and performance monitoring
Wendy Pontin, Principal Analyst and manager of the Norfolk Data Observatory (NDO), is a relatively well known speaker having presented widely at UK Local Government events. Here she gives an up-to-date assessment of where she feels a LIS should be positioned - at the heart of evidence based service planning and performance monitoring. Her presentation covers the primary purpose of NDO, the current raft of drivers that are encouraging LIS development, their target audience, the current levels of usage, the specific application areas that are benefiting from NDO, and their activities, ambitions and challenges to mainstream this application. This presentation should be of generic value to anyone considering setting up and managing a LIS, particularly where they are looking for specific examples of benefits for building a business case. Topic | Using a Local Information System (LIS) to address needs of Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA)
Stockport MBC and Stockport PCT have completed the first stage of their JSNA to pull together all relevant information, undertake analyses and submit their response. This work utilised their existing Local Information System, Stockport Profiling Live, to speed up the process of pulling together relevant data down to small area levels. For the next stage that involves embedding JSNA in the commissioning process they are seeking to move away from a reliance on static documents to support live data reporting. They are currently working in a number of areas to tune their data sharing platform to make this as effective as possible for this purpose. The JSNA is just one example of many multi-partner strategic initiatives that require a common and consistent evidence-base. Even for those not directly involved in this JSNA process, this online jsna guidance seminar is of relevance in demonstrating the value of data exchange and reporting tools within local partnerships. | |

Topic | BHLIS: The Story So Far...
Paula Black, Head of Research & Analysis, and Simon Ewing, Information Services Manager, present the story so far in terms of migrating their CityStats LIS application to the point of launching the new Brighton & Hove LIS (BHLIS) and its integration into their main LSP web site. The presentation by Paula and Simon lasts for approximately 25 minutes and is followed by a further 20 min Question and Answer session hosted by John Maslen. The Brighton & Hove approach to LIS development reflects their long-experience supporting an application of this kind and their commitment to adopting best practice in terms of organisational structure, identification of user needs and delivery of content. It offers some excellent insights which, it is hoped, would help others starting down this path or looking to mainstream their LIS and integrate it into their partnership structure.
