InstantAtlas - visualise | communicate | ENGAGE
eBulletin September 2008

Welcome to the September edition of the InstantAtlas eBulletin.

This month we feature three recently released client atlases in Public Health and Crime. The Cancer e-Atlas for England from the new National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN) provides interactive access to explore data from all the English Cancer Registries. The atlas of cancer registry data for the Institute for Cancer Epidemiology in Lübeck, provides a similar application for the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The Tyne and Wear Local Statistics Explorer presents patterns and trends of 13 crime types for the Tyne and Wear region using data sourced from Northumbria Police. We also introduce a demonstration of a performance scorecard for a UK Local Authority. This shows the flexibility of the Performance Analysis Template. If you want to understand how to produce this type of output you will also find details of the new Advanced InstantAtlas Training course offered by the Support Team.

We hope you find the September edition of interest.

Featured Applications

National Cancer Intelligence Network | Cancer E-Atlas for England

A new interactive web-based resource, called 'Cancer e-Atlas', has been developed using InstantAtlas to improve access to cancer statistics across England. It aims to provide health care professionals, commissioners, health service managers and the public with information on incidence, mortality and survival for the common types of cancers in men and women. "InstantAtlas provides an ideal tool for presenting cancer statistics in an engaging and informative way" says Dr Colin Pollock, Cancer e-Atlas project director, "It is inexpensive and familiar to the analysts working on the Cancer e-Atlas which reduces the risk and cost for the project compared to a bespoke development." Cancer statistics (incidence and mortality) are shown for Local Authorities and Cancer Networks using data from English cancer registries and the Office for National Statistics. Survival statistics are also shown but at Cancer Network level only. This is because any observed variations in survival rates across Local Authority areas are more likely to be caused by the natural variations that occur when dealing with smaller numbers of patients rather than showing real differences.

Government – Tyne and Wear Crime Atlas

Tyne and Wear Research and Information (TWRI), the sub-regional organisation responsible for providing a range of specialist research and intelligence services on behalf of 5 local authorities in the North East of England, have been long-serving customers of InstantAtlas. In the last few weeks we have worked with them to replace their atlases with newly branded Flash based reports. The Tyne and Wear Local Statistics Explorer now supports Ward level data presented as a single map or side-by-side comparison map across a range of themes including Crime, Unemployment and a range of Census based themes. The crime data, derived directly from Northumbria Police and run through a process of cleansing and geo-coding, supports 13 crime types with data aggregated temporally across a 12 month period and transformed into rates for publication annually. "We have been using InstantAtlas on our web site for many years as a local statistics explorer tool. We have upgraded our atlases to support Adobe Flash to reach a much wider audience. We are very pleased with the new functionality and branding. InstantAtlas is an ideal tool for publishing small area crime and employment statistics." Kadhem Jallab, Head of TWRI

InstantAtlas for Performance Reporting

Local authorities and strategic partnerships have gone through a process of identifying their target set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) from the super-set of 198 in the National Indicator Set (NIS). But how are they intending to monitor these and report on them both internally and externally? We have built a performance scorecard using our Performance Analysis template. It uses a set of KPIs for a fictitious local authority area. It demonstrates how you can apply InstantAtlas style interactive reports to the presentation of KPIs to support highly interactive, easy to use scorecards. You can manage your source KPI data in spreadsheets (which drive this example) or, with relatively minimal development, add InstantAtlas as an additional reporting capability for your corporate Performance Management System. We are working with a number of leading public sector performance management system vendors to support this type of reporting capability.
