Consultant Kamal D’Nigel has been using InstantAtlas on over 20 projects for Binley’s and explains how he used the online mapping software to create an atlas that can be used by anyone looking for information on commissioners in the NHS.
What is the NHS atlas you have developed?
The map shows Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and Academic Health Science Networks as a double map. This means that anyone looking to see which CCG is responsible for a certain area can find out by simply clicking on a map. We have made data such as population, budget and number of GPs available for each CCG.
How did the project start?
We had an existing online system for creating maps, but we were looking for something that would be easier to use, so that someone without any GIS experience would be able to make sense of it. At times we do need maps for people with GIS insight, but InstantAtlas gives us another option.
How did you find using InstantAtlas?
It does what it says – it creates maps quickly and I found the software intuitive to use. When I did have questions I found the support team very easy to work with.
Have you had any feedback on the NHS atlas?
The NHS atlas went live in February and it has been useful to show our capability to clients, and at the same time provide useful information. The live atlas links back to our data so it is a rich source of intelligence. The feedback is that clients really like it and found it easy to use. We had an internal event where it was showcased and it was well-received by all.
How will you develop the atlas?
Now that the pace of change within the NHS has slowed, we can start to add maps showing other organisations and how they overlap. So, for example, we will be looking next at the 10 specialised commissioning hubs in relation to Area Teams.
How else are you using InstantAtlas?
We have just finished a project for a pharmaceutical company which provides them with an atlas using the CCG and other data. This can be used offline and online, which means it is still useful to someone in salesforce who is travelling around without an internet connection.
