What are RSS News Feeds?

RSS (abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) News Feeds contain article headlines, descriptions and links to longer articles or Web pages and are fed to your RSS Reader in 'real time'.  You can get the latest information in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the website and search for it.  RSS News Feeds saves you time in two ways:

  • New articles and updated content are delivered to you without you having to search for it
  • The RSS feed contains just links, headlines and articles of the new information so downloads to your computer quickly

How do I start using RSS News Feeds?

  • If you use a browser such as Internet Explorer 7, Firefox or Opera, simply press the orange button in your browser or select 'subscribe to this feed' in the web page and choose a folder you want your feeds to go to.
  • Or download a special piece of software known as a RSS Reader - see below.

What is an RSS News Reader?

You can install an RSS Reader on your PC in order to view RSS news feeds.  An RSS Reader, also called a feed reader, is a web browser add-on program designed to gather and display RSS feeds.  It can reduce the time and effort needed to check online publications for updates. It creates, in effect, a personalised news subscription for the Internet user.  The program checks for RSS feeds at regular intervals and generates a message when a new article or message of potential interest is available. Instead of a generalized document arriving once a day, an RSS reader provides specific content as soon as it makes the news. When a pop-up appears, you can ignore it, read a summary or view the entire file.

There is a range of different news readers available. The majority are free downloads.  Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.
