National Cancer Intelligence Network
| Cancer Atlas for England | Date September 2008
A new interactive web-based resource, called 'Cancer e-Atlas' has been
developed using InstantAtlas to improve access to cancer statistics
across England. It aims to provide health care professionals, commissioners,
health service managers and the public with information on incidence,
mortality and survival for the common types of cancers in men and women.
"InstantAtlas provides an ideal tool for presenting cancer statistics
in an engaging and informative way" says Dr Colin Pollock, Cancer
e-Atlas project director, "It is inexpensive and familiar to the
analysts working on the Cancer e-Atlas which reduces the ris and cost
for the project compared to a bespoke development."
Cancer statistics (incidence and mortality) are shown for Local Authorities
and Cancer Networks using data from English cancer registries and the
Office for National Statistics. Survival statistics are also
shown but at Cancer Network level only. This is because any observed
variations in survival rates across Local Authority areas are more likely
to be caused by the natural variations that occur when dealing with
smaller numbers of patients rather than showing real differences.

NHS Community Health Profiles | Date August 2008
Extract taken from Website | Date 12/08/2008
The Association of Public Health Observatories
was commissioned by the Department of Health in 2005 to produce
Health Profiles. Health Profiles provide a snapshot of health for each
local council in England using key health indicators, which enables
comparison locally, regionally and over time.
The first batch of profiles was produced in 2006, for all but 2 of the
388 local authorities in England (County, District, Unitary and London
Borough). The updated and improved Health Profiles 2007 were released
in June 2007.
The aims of the profiles are:
* To provide a consistent, concise, comparable and balanced overview
of the populations health that informs local needs assessment,
policy, planning, performance management, surveillance and practice.
* To be a distillate of the absolutely key, most useful (currently available)
indicators (with a reference to new data/indicators and unavailable
data/indicators).
* To be primarily of use to joint efforts between local government and
the health service to improve health and reduce health inequalities,
but ultimately to empower the wider community.
Health Profiles Interactive
Health Profiles 2008 are a further development from the
2007 profiles, which built on the prototype released in 2006. Health
Profiles Interactive is a service new to Health Profiles 2008. It was
designed to allow users to select indicators and areas for comparison
through a map or list in an intuitive visual interface including the
Health Profiles spine chart format.
The interactive atlases have been produced at several different geography
levels to allow indicator comparisons over these geographies.

Child and Maternal Health Observatory
| November 2008
The National Child and Maternal Health Observatory (ChiMat)
provides information and intelligence to improve decision-making for
high quality, cost effective services. The web site provides on-line
tools to support different elements of the commissioning process. These
tools are brought together into a central hub for access to data, profiles
and reports on child and maternal health.
Kate Canning, Head of ChiMat, explains
"InstantAtlas Server provided the ChiMat team with an adaptable
solution for managing and presenting quantitative data that was inexpensive
and quick to implement. We were able to purchase the software and go
live within three months. It was easy for our web designer to brand
the InstantAtlas Server mini-site to match the ChiMat site. The highly
interactive atlases delivered through the Data Views module are more
engaging than static images. They allow users to explore our data and
provide answers leaving our team to focus on more complex queries. The
needs assessment modules we have produced through the Profile Reports
module will make individuals within PCTs more productive by reducing
the time it takes to produce needs assessments with local data."

National Health Episode Statistics | Date December
08
Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) are record level
patient data collected by the Department of Health from every NHS
hospital in England and Wales. HES data provides a comprehensive picture
of inpatient care that can support public health analysis, planning
and resource allocation, benchmarking, clinical audit, monitoring
and performance management and research.* Presenting
HES data using InstantAtlas makes the data more accessible. As Steve
Morgan, Senior Public Health Analyst at SEPHO says: " “I’ve demonstrated
the software to a number of senior public health specialists and received
a great deal of positive feedback – complex data previously once displayed
in tedious two dimensional spreadsheets and charts is now transformed
in an exciting and more meaningful manner
The new HES e-Atlas produced by SEPHO on behalf of APHO shows HES
data between 2003/4 – 2006/07 in a single map template (by Local
Authorities).

| February 2009
The National Obesity Observatory e-Atlas is an interactive
mapping tool for the analysis of data on the prevalence of obesity and its determinants for local authorities in England.
Caroline Ridler, Senior Public Health Intelligence Analyst explains
why NOO chose InstantAtlas: The National Obesity Observatory needs
software that is easy to use. The fact that we can use an InstantAtlas
template out-of-the box saves us time and helps us to display a lot
of complex data in a simple and accessible format.
The NOO e-Atlas is available from www.noo.org.uk/maps.
