Amethyst were 1 of the early innovators in the area of data sharing and crime mapping in the UK. They established a relatively sophisticated solution which went live in 2002. Their work was seen as best practice and referenced in GIS and Crime Mapping (Spencer Chainey & Jerry Ratcliffe) and Crime Mapping - Improving Performance (Police Standards Unit).

Community Health Profiles for England

Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO), UK

"Health Profiles provide a snapshot of health for each local council in England using key health indicators, which enables comparison locally, regionally and over time. We leveraged the power of Instant Atlas Server to display this complex data in an intuitive visual interface which would be equally useable by analysts, public health professionals and the public alike. Geowise could not have been more professional or cooperative in helping us achieve our vision on time and on budget."

InstantAtlas Display English Indices of Deprivation 2007

Blackpool Council

This Instant Atlas display was created to show viewers custom ranges rather than dividing the data into equal intervals or quantiles for the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 and its seven domains of deprivation. Some Local Area Agreement work is based on areas with the 3% most deprived nationally for the Index of Multiple Deprivation. This enables the viewer to sort the data and easily see where the highest pockets of deprivation in Blackpool are located. Custom ranges are created by classifying the data as categoric rather than numeric in the Data Manager.

Atlas of Deprivation

Bournemouth Borough Council

"The Performance Profile template has proved its usefulness in the presentation of this complex dataset. There are eight indicators available for each Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA). For each indicator, there is also comparison available with the previous release of the same dataset (2004). The performance profile has proved flexible enough to display the rank and score of all indicators for 2007, the rank of the corresponding indicator for 2004 (as a "target bar") and eye-catching symbols to highlight areas that have changed by "one" or "two or more" quintiles (in terms of national rank) from 2004 to 2007."

Neighbourhood Atlas

The "Bremen neighbourhood atlas“ offers a great variety of city-wide, district-based information. Contents include social, demographic and macro-economic data. Upon each inquiry, users are presented with a map, a table and two graphics, which allows direct comparisons of districts and/or analyses of temporal changes. Diverse tools, such as the option to highlight districts of interest, and an intuitive interface allow for detailed and customized searches as well as easy menu navigation. In the end, the user is never more than a few simple clicks away from the desired information.

Cambridge | Living Costs and Food Survey 2008 (LCF) Atlas

Cambridgeshire County Council

Our latest Cambridgeshire Atlas shows the expenditure and income of 21 Output Area Classification (OAC) groups. Each OAC group represents a distinct section of Cambridgeshire's communities. Data from the Living Costs and Food Survey (LCF) 2008 is presented to get an indication of the spending habits of Cambridgeshire's diverse communities. The LCF, formerly known as the Expenditure and Food Survey is an amalgamation of the Family Expenditure and National Food Surveys. These surveys have been collecting data upon Britain's spending and food consumption since the 1950's. The Office for National Statistics is responsible for overall management of this invaluable supply of economic and social data.

A total of 5271 households took part in the 2008 survey across Great Britain. The Office for National Statistics validate and adjust the data by using weights. They also append the social classification Output Area Classification (OAC) to the data. This helps us to gain a greater knowledge concerning the expenditure of differing sections of our society. The data therefore applies at a national level but the use of OAC allows us to provide local intelligence for the county.

The Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP) system has been used to classify expenditure on the LCF. COICOP is the internationally agreed classification system for reporting household consumption expenditure within National Accounts. Having an international standard classification facilitates greater consistency between countries in the collection and presentation of data.

Under COICOP expenditure is categorised into Living_Costs_and_Food_Survey_2008 twelve headings, for the Cambridgeshire Atlas one category (Alcohol and tobacco) has been divided for more insight. They are listed below:

1. Food & non-alcoholic drinks

2. Alcoholic drinks

3. Tobacco

4. Clothing & footwear

5. Housing (net), fuel & power

6. Household goods & services

7. Health

8. Transport

9. Communication

10. Recreation & culture

11. Education

12. Restaurants & hotels

13. Miscellaneous goods & services

Child and Maternity Health Observatory (ChiMat)

Yorkshire & Humberside Public Health Observatory (YHPHO)

InstantAtlas Server provided the ChiMat team with an adaptable solution for managing and presenting quantitative data that was inexpensive and quick to implement. We were able to purchase the software and go live within three months. It was easy for our web designer to brand the InstantAtlas Server mini-site to match the ChiMat site. The highly interactive atlases delivered through the Data Views module are more engaging than static images. They allow users to explore our data and provide answers leaving our team to focus on more complex queries. The needs assessment modules we have produced through the Profile Reports module will make individuals within PCTs more productive by reducing the time it takes to produce needs assessments with local data.

Data Unit Wales

Meeting local community information needs with bilingual microsites

The Local Government Data Unit Wales (the Data Unit) is part of the local government family in Wales. Originally the Data Unit was set up in 2001 to help local authorities and the Welsh Assembly Government use data more effectively so that they are able to understand local priorities and improve the services they provide to the people of Wales. The mission hasn’t changed but the focus is now more on local government.

Meeting the need
To meet the need for an online information system geared to its key personas, the Data Unit launched its national InfoBase service in June 2009 (InfoBaseCymru). Several Welsh local authorities were keen to have their own mini sites based on InfoBaseCymru. The first local site, InfoBaseCaerffili, was therefore launched as a pilot at the same time as InfoBaseCymru, thus creating the InfoBase service.

Ward Profiles 2010

Greater London Intelligence

Profiles created using InstantAtlas provide a summary of demographic and related data for each ward in Greater London. The profiles are designed to provide an overview of the population in each area by combining a range of data on the population, diversity, households, life expectancy, housing, crime, benefits, land use, deprivation, and employment.

Gareth Piggott, says: “We are going to be using InstantAtlas more and more. A good example of this is the ongoing project called Focus on London. Rather than having a 200 page report that is produced every year, we will be releasing one chapter per month with interactive mapping on our website. This means we will have a new InstantAtlas report every month.”

newhamINFO

London Borough of Newham

This atlas was prepared for the newhamINFO Team of London Borough of Newham to present nationally ranked scores of multiple deprivation at small area level. The report uses our Performance Profile template which is ideal for presenting data of this kind - nationally consistent ranks of multiple domains related to deprivation. The bars of the bullet graph (top right) illustrate how varied the cross-domain profile of deprivation can be at a neighbourhood scale. The background grey bars indicate how areas rank nationally in terms of fifths (quintiles) with bars overlapping the darkest grey sections being classed in the 20% most deprived of all areas nationally.

Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) Tool

South West Public Health Observatory (SWPHO)

The Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) tool aims to help primary care trusts and local authorities jointly identify their areas of need. The Area Profile Template was chosen as there are a large number of indicators to be shown, and trend data is not widely available.
